While the Stockholm skies stay cloudy and the sun keeps leading us on with unfulfilled promises of brighter, warmer days, we can’t stop dreaming away to heavenly Cancún. Assuming that someday our dreams will come true, we’ve decided to gather the best pointers for accommodation in this beautiful piece of land.
Sometimes we like it rough. Being on the road, our only possessions crumbled together in a backpack, not knowing where we’ll be in a week, just hoping someone will speak our language in the next town, and loving every minute. But, let’s face it, we’re not 21 anymore, and a bit of luxury in the shape of a nice hotel room in a nice resort never hurt anyone, right? Still, as always, we love Couchsurfing. Cancún doesn’t have hosts waiting for you at every corner, but it should still be possible finding a crashable couch with a friendly local. There’s even a Couchsurfing Group entirely dedicated to Cancún whichis definitely worth checking out.
Timeshares don’t often come up in young travelers’ tales. But really, why not? You can easily find lots of
timeshares in Cancun, and it’s fairly easy to find timeshares for rent. Compared to hotels you get a lot more for your dollar, and having a whole flat makes it much easier to invite locals over to show you how to drink tequila like a real Mexican (the lick-sip-suck is for wimps, body shots might still find approval). Plus, since timeshares are almost always located within the resorts, you still get the inside scoop on the cultural twilight zone that exists within the walls. And if you’re afraid to admit how much you love the poolside bar, you can always justify your presence by naming your stay an anthropological field study.
You also have the cheap hostel option where you’ll be sure to find a chilled atmosphere, possibly a home-cooked meal, and definitely more tequila-starving party animals. In fact you’ll find Mexico’s best of the bunch in Cancún. For instance, Quetzal is an old rehearsal studio for all kinds of performers now turned Cancún’s favorite hostel, and everyone seems to love the circus vibe.
So, if you decide you can do without a lot of comfy amenities then crashing on a local\'s couch or staying in a hostel should be perfect for you. If you’d rather experience the finer side of Cancún and want a touch of luxury on your travels, try
renting a timeshare for your trip to this oasis.
