The Starbierfest is the second beer event in Munich, after the famous 'Oktoberfest' that takes place in September. The Starbierfest (Strong Beer Festival) last for about 4 weeks in March, during Lent.
This festival originates in the middle age, when monks used to brew a strong and nutritious beer to go through Lent.
The caracteristics of this beer remain the same nowaday: very strong and very heavy! The starkbeer is about 8° strong, but the best is that it remains about 180g of solid after boiling the water and alcohol of 1 liter of this beer! Hence the other name of the Starkbier: the liquid food! This dark beer is actually quite sweet (compare to other dark beer), and is of course very good!
Serveral Bräuhaus celebrate this event: Paulaner (Nockherberg), Augustiner (Augustinerkeller) and Löwenbräu (Löwenbräukeller), among others. Each brewery has its own name for the Starkbier: Paulaner Salvator, Augustiner Maximator, Löwenbräu Triumphator, Airbräu Aviator, etc..
I've been last year to the Augustiner-Keller, and this year to Paulaner am Nockherberg: the atmosphere was basically the same, just crazy!!Everybody gather in the Festhalle of the bräuhaus, wearing the local lederhausen and dirndl, to taste the beer, eat, sing and dance!Needless to say that after a couple of Maß (1 liter glasses) everybody is ready to party! (Note: you can't order smaller quantity..)As the live band on stage is playing Oktoberfest classic songs, everybody jumps on the benches, dance, and sing along!Special warning: this beer is damm strong!! Even if you know it, you'll really realize after 2 or 3 Maß that the effects are multiply compare to a normal beer! :)
The Starkbierfest is actually a good a way of discovering the local beer culture without the hassle of the Oktoberfest: it's easy to book tables, and accommodation prices are normal during this period.
Prices:around 9€ for a Maß of beer10-20€ for a meal2-8€ for the entranceReservation is mandatory during weekend
