Description
Located in the heart of the Ann Siang Hill area, Matchbox was the perfect sleeping option for my first stay in Singapore. I enjoyed the quiet and historic neighborhood as much as the Maxwell Hawker center next door that helped me quickly discover the wonders of the local food.
Once you are done exploring the immediate surroundings, Chinatown is just 5 minutes away and the close by Maxwell station will take you anywhere in town easily.
The hostel, which recently opened in August 2011, provides a brand new vision of budget accommodation far from the usual backpacker clichés. Inspired by the Japanese capsule hotels, Matchbox offers about 30 single/double beds in 3 separate dorms. The modern interior of this old Chinese clan house provides a very comfortable accommodation and makes very the interaction between travelers.
You will find there a big common room with comfy sofas and bean bags as well as huge flat screen TV with the latest videos games (including Band Hero!).
I had a great stay at Matchbox and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Singapore. It's small, cosy and with a lot of character, just how I like my hostels.
The small negative point might be the matresses that are a bit hard but I was too jet lagged to mind anyways.
The price range is obviously a bit more expensive that the backpackes of Little India but the originality of the place and the location alone make it worth the extra SGD you will spend on it!
