It’s hard to deny the relationship between travel and food. You can explore a place as much through its sights as you can its cuisine. The GLORIOUS! Flavour Map is an interactive, crowdsourced map that has that very fact in mind. It’s a global map of flavors comprised of “flavor pins” from around the world. Users can pin everything from specific ingredients to restaurants, street food and even home-cooked meals. With more content, the map could serve as a great search tool for the gourmands among us travels.

Those of you who follow Hejorama know that we are not very much into hip trends. And when we talk about a product, you’ll believe is when we say it’s only because we really like it. Today we introduce you to a new line of shoes that will allow you to travel comfortably on your bike, while looking stylish and elegant.

These shoes are born from a collaboration of two French bike lovers: the shoemaker Black Dandy and the bicycle culture blog As De Pique. Their collection, called “PISTARD,” will also allow you to travel back to a time when indoor cycling was the number one sport.

During these indoor races, champions and starlets were fighting for titles and audience affection with both their skills and their style.

Black Dandy and As De Pique are bringing this spirit back to life with three different models, allowing you to ride with style through life, whether you ride for performances, to get to work, or to party.

The collection:

We were invited by our good friend and brilliant tattoo artist, Sunny Buick. She was performing in a caravan as you can see on the photos. You might not know it but her real middle name is actually Gypsy. A real traveler!

It was a fascinating night but very hard to describe. So here are some photos we took that should give you an idea of what was going on.

During his travels, Jolipunk used to take photos of local people. Once, one of them told him: “Sorry, but all the tourists shoot us as folkloric things… And one day, we are on postcards. Without me!”

That’s why he decided to take photos that wouldn’t be usable as postcards and allowed local people to express their feelings: “Fucking tourist!”

The result: three strong photo series made in Bali, Peru and Cuba.

But as the communities prepare for the end of what is the tourist season for grey haired sun seekers and golfers, they also prepare for the influx of 20 and 30-somethings from across North America, and the A to D list celebrities from Hollywood who migrate to the desert for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, or simply, “Coachella” as it is known.

Arriving by plane or by car to the Coachella Valley, or the Palm Springs area, is always an incredible experience. Picture perfect green golf courses and palm tree-lined communities sit in the shadow of rolling desert mountains (sometimes even capped with snow) and amongst vast stretches of barren desert. Not far away is Joshua Tree National Park, the shimmering Salton Sea and of course, the border with Mexico. Entering any grocery store early in the days during the weekends the festival is on is an interesting experience, as festival attendees stock up on food and incredibly cheap booze.

The Coachella Valley is stunningly beautiful, and has an interesting and diverse mix of locals (like any California county) and retired golf enthusiasts and Los Angeles-based weekend tennis warriors. And adding the fact that the valley’s warm, dry climate can become intensely hot once spring rolls around, Indio, California seems a strange choice in setting for an enormous mainstream music festival.

But after its 13th year, Coachella is a becoming a festival not to be missed. For the first time this year, the festival featured identical lineups over back-to-back weekends, as demand for tickets can no longer be satisfied over one weekend. After a massive two-day festival in 1999 that featuring Beck and Rage Against the Machine, the festival organizers were deep in debt. No festival took place in 2000, and the 2001 event was only a one day affair.

But in the past decade, Coachella has only gained steam. The festival now runs two, three-day festivals over two weekends, and after being taken over by a major event promoter a few years ago, both weekends operate like a well-oiled machine of sunshine, music, camping, drugs and youthful exuberance.

This year the festival saw breakout performances from Gary Clark Jr., M83, St. Vincent and tUnE-yArDs, along with massive headlining sets from Radiohead, The Black Keys, Florence and The Machine, The Shins, Bon Iver, Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta, as well as a the hologram of the late Tupac Shakur joining the alive and stoned Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on stage to close out both weekends.

tUnE-yArDs - Powa, Live From Coachella, April 14, 2012

The first weekend this year featured the coldest temperatures ever for a Coachella festival weekend, including only the second day of rain ever (take that Glastonbury!), while the second weekend (which we were lucky to attend) set the record for hottest temperatures in the 13 years the festival has run (106F/42C on both Saturday and Sunday).

I chose drinking lots of water over downing $7 Heinekens or taking hallucinogens, and with 60 SPF sunscreen, the festival is nothing but enjoyable. This year, for my first Coachella, we skipped the camping experience, which I hear brings 24-hour parties and long queues for a shower. Instead, we opted to stay nearby in a family-owned condo, taking the affordable shuttle buses to the Empire Polo Field every day (where the festival has always been held).

The real event for celebrities, annoying corporate promoters and journalists are the infamous after parties that take place at 5-Star Palm Springs resorts or at the condos rented out by bands. This year, after Radiohead wrapped up their set on the second Saturday, lead singer Thom Yorke DJ’d his own after party at the glitzy Parker Hotel for those lucky enough to get an invite.

Apart from having slim chance of getting an invite to these parties, the only thing anyone could really complain about:

- Long lines for free water, mediocre and overpriced food, $7 beer, $12 margaritas.

- Lack of shade outside of a beer garden.

- Those with VIP or backstage bracelets have special sections in front of all stages, and will always be closer the bands (standing where the security guards do at most concerts, but in enlarged pens between the general admission crowd and the stage).

- Double standards at security checks (I saw EVERY item on the “Do Not Bring” list inside the festival (DSLR cameras, camel backpacks, outside food, etc).

- Five stages means you always have to miss an up and coming act if you want to see a headliner).

Things that are awesome:

- Free parking at shuttle bus stops throughout the Coachella Valley.

- Shuttles run often, have hilarious organizers getting you excited onboard, many have air conditioning, and the buses bypass traffic.

- Bottled water is only $2 (price capped since 1999).

- Always having the opportunity to get cooled down by mist tents and water cannons.

- On-site lockers.

- It’s fucking beautiful in the desert (most bands encourage the crowd to turn around to check out the sun sinking behind the sandy desert mountains, beyond the hundreds of palm trees surrounding the festival grounds).

Overall, Coachella is very well organized, and considering the calibre of artists the festival brings in every year, is an event that is nothing but an enjoyable experience. Get your tickets early next year - Coachella will only continue to sell out in mere minutes as always!

- Daniel

The well-traveled and city dwellers among us have learned to read metro maps with ease and efficiency. So much ease in fact, I myself often wish the style and structure of metro maps were utilized elsewhere. The following maps do just that:

Sam Loman’s Underskin is a metro map of the body, making human anatomy as easy as buying a metro ticket. The subway lines represent the different systems of the body, with stations located at the organs and major bones.

Cameron Booth’s Interstates as a Subway Diagram is a simplistic representation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System, which in reality is anything but simplistic.

The Milky Way Transit Authority map by Samuel Arbesman depicts our galaxy in a series of subway lines and stations. The lines correspond to arms of the galaxy and the stations are actual locations within the Milky Way. While galactic space travel is not a reality to the masses, this map helps you imagine a time when it might be.

No matter where you’ve been, or where you’re from, as travelers, we can all probably agree that there is a special place in our hearts for Paris.

The City of Lights carries a certain romance for everyone who has passed through, and especially for team Hejorama, who call Paris home.

We wanted to create a souvenir to celebrate Paris in a way that was a bit different than cheap cliché T-shirts, but that also pays tribute to other places important to us, and to the people who call them home.

The T-shirt designs celebrate Berlin, New York City and Japan as a whole.

Inspiration for the T-shirts came from the song “J’ai deux amours, mon pays et Paris,” a song by Josephine Baker.

So, for a special souvenir that’s a little bit different … join us in toasting New York, Berlin and Japan, while showing your love for Paris.

This flight from Munich to Dubai was a gift from my familly for my 30th birthday: I've always wanted to flight on the A380, the biggest commercial plane ever!! So this flight was part of a 10 days trip to South East Asia: Kuala Lumpur - Singapour - Bintan (Indonesia). Highly recommended destinations!

I was not disappointed by the A380 itself: massive, impressive, very silent, and a bright interior. Huge improvement compared to the 777 I had on the other legs of the trip...

Menu

This meal was also a real surprise: very good!
The hot smoked salmon was awsome: tender, tasty, just like the one you can find in Scandinavia. The coleslaw was not as impressive, but still good.
The main dish, parmesan chicken with polenta and vegetable, was almost perfect! Tasty chicken, perfectly cooked, with a tasty pesto rosso sauce, and good vegetables. Only the polenta was missing a bit of cooking time.
The dessert was also great: a cheesecake, always appetizing, with blackcurrant, a good combination.
The plate also include a "snackbox", with crackers, French cheese (Kiri!!) and sweet chili sauce.

In economy class, you usually get some Australian or South African wines, or some very bad mix of cheap wines from the South of France.

As a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, I'm used to May Day being more or less reserved for brunch with anthem-roaring, aquavit-drinking friends, then marches, speeches, music, and lots of beer, all framed by waves of red flags and herds of teenagers who seem much more excited to get hammered than to express their solidarity with workers worldwide.

This year, I got to experience May Day in Paris for a change, and the impressions were manifold and almost frighteningly diverse.

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s election time in France, and there was no way the right wing was going to let any public holiday pass - let alone one tainted by socialist tradition - without trying to steal the show. To fit the occasion, Paris was laid out like a proper amusement park: the fancy Sarko City in the southwest, Marine’s secluded castle to the north, and the vast and lively Redlands in the southeast. I went to all parts of course, and even though some of the attractions made me gag a bit and even got scary at times, I’m glad I stayed on till the end.

My first stop was the Front National assembly in front of the beautiful Opera. There I managed to catch two generations of Le Pen respectively commemorate the 600th anniversary of Jeanne d’Arc, the warfaring country girl celebrated as the epitome of a true nationalist by the party on every May 1st since the late 1980s, and rage at most of the rest of the world. A couple of skinheads were asked to leave by party security, their rough looks apparently not in line with Marine’s vision of a fresh, clean FN image. I got myself a few suspicious glances and was given a serious evil eye by a man with a very big flag. But I stood my ground and stayed, watching people while pondering how a crowd of such diversity and magnitude had been convinced to jump on a ride as daunting as this one.

After a quick lunch by the Eiffel Tower, I toured on to Sarko City by Trocadéro. A strange place this was, densely populated by light-skinned men and women, all perfectly groomed and hushing each other at the crucial moment when their Nicolas took the stage. This attraction seemed a bit overdone to me, considering especially le petit prince’s violently dramatic intro music. But everyone else there was intensely excited, waving even more tricolores even higher than anyone else I saw that day. In France, May 1st is known as fête du travail rather than fête des travailleurs, and evidently, the obviously well-off sarkozists figured the day was as much theirs as anyone else’s. More than anything, this assembly was marked by the strong scent of perfume, a feeling of possibly being in an A.I.-themed horror movie, and lots of trying not to ruin designer shoes by stepping on anyone’s toes. Did one (robot-like) segment alone secure Sarkozy’s last presidency?

Puzzled and somewhat troubled by what I had seen so far, I ventured east toward the Redlands, where a genuine workers’ march was to take off from Place Denfert. Luckily, I made it there just in time to catch the tail of the march. Working my way further and further up the huge serpentine of people, balloons, and cars blasting music, I passed students, teachers, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, feminists, people wearing stickers, Syrians, you name it. What they seemed to have in common was an all-encompassing air of celebratory rebellion. Crying out for better times while rejoicing in community, well, it made sense. Actually it was about the first thing that made sense to me that day.
