Bathymetric charts are the underwater equivalent of the topographic map. They depict the contours, crevasses, and the general unknown that is our Earth’s ocean floors and lake beds.

Robbie and Kara Johnson, a husband and wife duo, are the shopkeepers of the aptly named Below the Boat. They distribute these stunning bathymetric charts made from laser-cut sheets of Baltic birch wood and glue. The charts are designed by a team of professionals based in Michigan and produced overseas. Currently, they only carry chats depicting bodies of water within or around the North American continent.

It’s said that we know less about our oceans than the dark side of the moon. These maps, along with being works of art, are an insight into the world that lies beneath the water line of our lakes and oceans.
